Dentist Tears Out Dental Work Due to Unpaid Bill

September 26th, 2008 · No Comments

In the dental world, helping patients have proper dental hygiene and the care they need is paramount. However, one dentist in Germany seems to have other priorities. In the town of Neu-Ulm, a male dentist went to the home of his 35-year-old female patient and tied her to a chair. Without saying anything he forced the woman’s mouth open and removed the women’s dental work that he had performed some time earlier. He took the £320 worth of bridge work that the woman’s insurance company refused to pay for.

Police are ordering that the dentist return her dental work, as well as replace them in her mouth. She has been unable to eat and speak in her normal manner since the incident took place. However, even if the dentist is convicted for some wrong, the only charge he faces is “professional discipline.”

Tooth Tissues Ease Children’s Dental Care

September 15th, 2008 · No Comments

Many parents face a daily battle of struggling to brush their young children’s teeth.  Fortunately, tooth tissues may help parents protect the oral health of their children without a fight.

Doctors Grace Lo and Jonathan Korn, a married couple with two daughters, developed tooth tissues as a way to prevent gum disease and cavities in young children who are often resistant to having their teeth brushed.  These tissues are disposable wipes that protect against tooth and gum diseases that can be rubbed across the teeth and / or gums of young children.

A number of parents have reported great success with tooth tissues, as children find them more fun than toothbrushing.  They can be purchased in packs of 12 ($4) or larger packs of 30 wipes ($6.99).

The Center for Disease Control has reported that tooth decay has dropped for nearly every age group in the United States except for children ages 2-5.

If you would like more information on protecting the oral health of your children, contact a Lisle dentist at the Lisle Dental Center today by calling 630-964-0944.

Mobile Dental Clinic Hopes to Increase Dental Tourism

September 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

Currently, the UK is suffering from a shortage of qualified dentists, whereas Hungarian dentists are noticing a deficit in the number of patients they have.

In light of this, Christopher Hall and Hungarian dentist Cecilia Varga have set up a mobile dental clinic called “Hungarian Dental Travel” that is providing consultations in Manchester this week in hopes of gaining some new patients.

The idea is meant to spread the word about dental tourism. With the growth of so many discount airlines that fly between major European cities, it is a completely financially viable option for a citizen of the UK to fly to Hungary for high quality, inexpensive dental care.

What Hall and Varga are hoping to show to the UK population is that foreign dentists are as qualified and skilled as dentists in the UK, of which there are too few.

Hall admitted that the only difficulty they have experienced thus far is using a mobile x-ray machine outside the safety of an office with protective walls.

Japanese Scientists Use Wisdom Teeth for Stem Cell Research

August 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

Japanese scientists have made a significant medical breakthrough by finding a way to create stem cells from extracted wisdom teeth.

Dr. Hajime Ogushi and his team at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology were able to take the pulp from wisdom teeth that had been extracted three years ago and grow stem cells, which have the ability to develop into nerves or replacement human organs.

This development is a notable discovery, as research on stem cells taken from human fetuses has been a source of much controversy in recent years after the Vatican accused this procedure of destroying human life.

The teeth that Dr. Ogushi and his team worked with were taken from a 10-year-old girl three years ago and had been kept in a freezer since that time. Cells were taken from the teeth and allowed to develop for 35 days. After this time, the scientists were able to confirm through testing that the cells that had grown were indeed stem cells.

Excellent Dental Care in Namibian School

August 14th, 2008 · No Comments

A unique school in Namibia that caters to some of the poorest families in the area not only emphasizes the importance of school subjects such as reading, writing and English, but teachers and staff highlight the importance of proper dental hygiene, as well. Every day, following snack time, students are lead to the bathroom where they brush their teeth under their teachers’ supervision. Once they are finished eating the students are given their personal toothbrush by their teachers, who place the appropriate amount of toothpaste on the brush, and are then required to brush their teeth for sixty seconds while their teacher looks on.

Once a month, a dentist visits the school to remind the children about the importance of proper dental care. These students not only brush their teeth with donated brushes and toothpaste, but they also receive free check-ups and procedures from several participating dentists.

To find out more about proper dental care or to schedule an appointment with a Lisle Dentist, call the Lisle Dentist Center today at 630-964-0944.
